The PADI International Women's Dive Day event I organised this year was a great success!
It was so great to see women coming together to get out there and go diving - even in the middle of winter! We met at the Auckland Scuba dive shop at 9am to get everybody kitted up and handed out the goodie bags to everyone which included a tote bag, a hat, lanyard, mask strap and dive magazine!
We loaded the van and hit the road and headed up to our chosen dive site, Mathesons Bay. It was a fun drive up with plenty of singalongs and 'power songs' to get everyone in the mood and thankfully, we were really lucky it was a beautiful day - who wouldn't want to be out diving!
Once we arrived at Mathesons, we had a quick 'icebreaker' game where everybody had to write down a few things about themselves and then as a group, we had to guess which bit of paper belonged to who. Was a great conversation starter and already the laughs had begun. We got ourselves kitted up for the first dive, where we planned to go out the back of the little island in the bay and have a nice fun dive. The water was pretty cold and the vis wasn't the best but it was still a good dive as most of the ladies hadn't been to that spot before, so they had a great time discovering a new dive spot!
Back on land we played another game for a spot prize and boy oh boy, that one got everyone howling with laughter! If you've ever seen Ellen's game of 'Head's Up!' you'll know what I mean! Jeni showed us all up by being the best guesser of the bunch and won herself a dive torch for her efforts! Once everyone was sufficiently warmed up, I let everyone know that the second dive for the day was a treasure hunt - we had set out an area in the bay and hidden golf balls and in their buddy teams, they had to go and find the most balls they could in a set time and the buddy team who found the most would win a prize. Straight away, tactics were being talked and then the race was on!! Congratulations to Holly and Angharad who found the most balls and scored themselves a lava core each!
Once the dives were done, we had a BBQ waiting for the ladies to enjoy as well as a glass of bubbles to celebrate an awesome day out!
It was an awesome day and hopefully we can get even more ladies to join us next year! But I do think I might host a womens dive day in summer for us Southern hemisphere ladies....
